Dance Performances By Chaksampa
- ShaNag – Black Hat DanceThis dance of the sorcerers (Ngakpas), originated in the 9th century and is performed mainly in the monasteries to dispel evil spirits. A dancer adorned in ceremonial warrior costume, carries a dagger in one hand and human skull cup in the other hand for offering libations to the deities.
- Ser Kyi Khorlo
It means Golden Wheel. This is one of the first dances that was re-choreographed and performed by female artists at TIPA in the early 1960s. The song is about reminiscing the good old days of independent Tibet. This is a very popular dance number for many years. - Ngonpai DhonThis is the first ritual dance performed in Ache Lhamo (Goddess Sister). It is the dance of the hunters who represent one of the manifestations of Chagna Dorjee, the protector deity.This dance is to subdue evil and to purify the stage.
- Thoeshey – A Tibetan Classical SongThoeshey and Nangma is a form of light classical music from Lhasa. The style is said to be influenced by Muslim music from the region of Kashmir. In fact, some of the most popular Nangma musicians in Lhasa are Muslim.The form gradually became very popular in the homes of noblemen and the taverns or “chang houses.”
- Lhadar KarpoTraditional song and dance from Bathang in Kham, Eastern Tibet. It is a celebration song of good farming and prosperity to the community of Bapa natives.
- Kongshey – Traditonal Dance from KongpoA dance from the Kongpo province in southeastern Tibet, a lush forested region with the most beautiful landscape in Tibet. The Kongpo people are known for their songs and dances. This song is dedicated to the monastery Dhemo Chakar Chaknak. The costumes are historical, from the region of Kongpo. The auspicious arrows wrapped in five colors that are carried by the girls in this dance are used in many ceremonies in Tibetan considered good luck in fulfilling wishes.
- MirikThe ceremonial dance representing the unity of Tibet’s three provinces: U’tsang, Doetoe and Doemey.
- Sha ChamThe sacred stag dance is performed in monasteries. The stag represents messenger of lord of death. The stag cuts an effigy of evil and throws them in various directions to purify the place.
- Drayen ShapdroIt is a dance of lute player, a very popular style in central and western Tibet. It is performed in taverns, picnics and in the streets of Lhasa, Tibet’s capital.
- Gha ChamdoThis is a traditional duet Kham-pa song from Chamdo region of Eastern Tibet. This song talks about the grand lives of people in this prosperous Chamdo community.
